Math Technology Magnet (Grades 6–8)

Overview:

Welcome to the Math Technology Magnet, where students explore the power of mathematics through immersive technology and real-world problem-solving. This dynamic program engages students in grades 6–8 by integrating mathematical concepts with innovative tools like spreadsheets, interactive simulations, and Virtual Reality using PRISMS. Students build confidence, collaboration, and critical thinking skills while discovering how math drives the systems and structures around them.

In the Math Technology Magnet, students don’t just solve problems—they experience them. Using PRISMS VR and other hands-on tools, they engage deeply with math concepts, making abstract ideas concrete and applicable to their lives and futures.

Program Highlights:

Technology-Rich Learning Environment:

Students learn math through digital tools including virtual reality headsets, interactive graphing platforms, and spreadsheet applications. These tools make complex concepts accessible and engaging for all learners.

Immersive Virtual Reality with PRISMS:

Using the PRISMS VR platform, students step into real-world math scenarios—from managing water flow in a city to calculating the efficiency of solar panels. This experiential learning helps students develop a deeper conceptual understanding and retention of core mathematical ideas.

Project-Based Learning:

Students apply their mathematical knowledge to solve real-world problems in collaborative projects. These may include data analysis of school surveys, designing efficient spaces using geometric principles, or simulating resource distribution using ratios and proportions.

Visual, Hands-On Exploration:

Lessons are designed with multiple entry points and digital supports. Whether exploring transformations using Desmos or tracking data in Google Sheets, students engage through multiple modalities that support diverse learners.

Grade-Level Breakdown:

Grade 6:

Students explore ratios, geometry, and numerical relationships through spreadsheet modeling and VR experiences. They begin using Desmos and Google Sheets to visualize data and apply their learning in projects focused on spatial reasoning and measurement.

Grade 7:

Building on foundational skills, students investigate proportional relationships, statistics, and probability through real-life contexts in PRISMS. They analyze data, use simulations, and engage with VR experiences that deepen their understanding of math in the environment around them.

Grade 8:

Students apply their skills to algebraic thinking, linear equations, functions, and 3D geometry. They complete advanced VR tasks in PRISMS, such as analyzing systems and modeling change. The year culminates in a final applied math technology project where students demonstrate their mastery.
