The safety and well-being of all students and staff members at I.S. 228 remains our highest priority. Towards that end, we are informing you about an incident that took place today in our school in which no one was injured.
This afternoon a small floor buffing machine caught fire in the storage area of the basement. As a result, the building was briefly evacuated for approximately fifteen minutes. The custodian quickly extinguished the fire. FDNY responded and they confirmed that it was safe to re-enter the building.
The alarm sounded as students were transitioning to their period 6 class. Students who normally eat lunch during period 6 ate their lunch about 20 minutes later than usual.
We assure you that every precaution was taken and will continue to be taken to ensure the safety of our students and staff. I want to thank all of our students and staff for their cooperation during this brief evacuation.
We look forward to your continued partnership as we work together to ensure that I.S. 228 continues to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students.
If you have any questions please contact the school at 718-375-7638.
