Last week you read about John Brown, who made struck fear into many slaveholders--a white man encouraging and helping enslaved people get weapons and fight against their enslavement. Today we are going to look at the conditions of being an enslaved person.

Henry David Thoreau was an important philosophical writer of the 19th century. He lived in Massachusetts. He wrote a paper called "Civil Disobedience" about how people should follow their conscience no matter what the law says.

Do you think Thoreau was a criminal or a hero? Please respond in two sentences.

An abolitionist is a person who favors the abolition (or destruction) of a practice, in the US slavery.
