STUDENT PHONE POLICY & GUIDELINES

 

Phones, Smart Watches and AirPods are not to be used on school property at any time including morning arrival, class time, lunch/recess or any after school activity. Every student is assigned a personal Yondr Pouch. Student’s will have their Pouch with them at all times. While the Yondr Pouch is considered school property, it is each student’s responsibility to keep their Pouch in good working condition. Every classroom will have an unlocking device that can be used in the event of an emergency.

 

DAILY PROCESS

 

ARRIVAL

  1. Students will bring their Pouch to school daily.
  2. Upon entering the building, students will turn off their phones/devices.
  3. Students will place their devices inside the Pouch and secure it in front of school staff.
  4. Students will store the Pouch in their backpack for the day.
  5. If a student forgets their pouch, the phone will be held in phone jail in the main office, room 113.. 
  6. If students arrive late, they will secure their devices in the Pouch in the Main Office.

 

DISMISSAL

  1. Students will unlock their Pouch at the end of Period 8 in the classroom.
  2. Students will store their Pouch in their backpack to use the next day.
  3. Students who leave early will have their phone unlocked in the Main Office.

 

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION

  1. In case of emergency or exigent circumstances, parents or guardians can call Alexa Calisto, parent coordinator, at 718-375-7635 ext 1132 to reach their child.
  2. In case of emergency or exigent circumstances, students may unlock their phones in either their assistant principal’s office or the main office, room 113, to reach their parents or guardians.
  3. In case of emergency or exigent circumstances, the school will use GAMA & Remind to communicate information to parents or guardians.

EXCEPTIONS

  • Students are allowed to use their device if they have an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 Plan that includes use of an internet-enabled device and do not have a DOE-issued device for such purpose. Those students will be given a “medical” yondr pouch that has a velcro closure. 
  • Parents/guardians must contact Jennifer Schneider, Assistant Principal for Special Education at 718-375-7635 ext 4230 if a student requires an exception for reasons such as: medical monitoring/treatment s (for example to monitor blood sugar or other similar circumstances), if student is a caregiver, for approved language purposes (such as translation or interpretation services if no other means are available), or where otherwise required by law.
  • The principal/designee may authorize use for an educational purpose.  
  • Exceptions will be processed and approved within 10 days of the request being made. 



VIOLATIONS

  1. Unauthorized Phone Use:
  • 1st  Violation- a phone call home and the phone/device(s) will be secured.
  • 2nd Violation- a phone call home will be made, the phone/device(s) will be confiscated and lunch detention will be given.
  • 3rd Violation- parents will be contacted to pick up the device(s) and a meeting will be held to discuss a phone management plan. Possible disciplinary action as adhered to by the Citywide Behavioral Expectations to Support Student Learning Grades 6–12.
  1. Damaged/Lost Pouch:
    1. Lost Pouches are reported to the grade level assistant principal. The phone will be kept in phone jail, in room 113, till the student pays $30 for a new pouch. 
    2. Administration will collect the phone and damaged pouch and call home for a Parent Meeting. 
  • Students/families may face a possible $30 fee for a replacement Pouch. 
  • Examples of damage:
    • Deep scratches on the globe and on the green ring around it 
    • Intentional pen marks on the inside of the Pouch
    • Bent pins
    • Pin and button not fully recessing, due to pin damage
