Dear Parents & Guardians,

The David A. Boody community is a beautiful representation of the world, rich with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. It is our goal to create a safe space for teaching and learning, while paying close attention to the social-emotional needs of everyone here.  We often reference our Moral Compass of Kindness and its four essential pillars: integrity, compassion, responsibility, and forgiveness. Recent events, however, compel us to move beyond simply referencing these pillars and actively put them into practice every day. We have regrettably seen several instances of bias and hate, including racist and antisemitic comments between students so far this year. I want to be perfectly clear, this behavior is not tolerated or accepted at David A. Boody.

When an issue of hate or bias arises, we investigate immediately, including reporting to NYPD when appropriate. Our deans and school counselors work together to administer discipline and/or provide educational interventions, based on the results of the investigation. Intensive counseling sessions and parent meetings are also held.

We also provide support at the class level with conversations facilitated by counselors, deans, and/or administration in the space where unacceptable words or symbols were seen. The message is delivered clearly; hate has no place here.

Again, we always administer consequences when appropriate, and through education, work to change the negative behaviors exhibited. We are preparing our students to be productive, empathetic members of society. We expect our students to represent what we promote here at David A. Boody, both in and out of the building.

We work to set and deliver clear expectations about communication, appropriate language, and respect for all. There is much work to be done.  I am asking all of you, students, families, and staff, to be upstanders in this critical work. If you see something, say something. If you hear something, say something. These issues cannot be addressed or stopped if we are not aware of them. We sometimes need to be in an uncomfortable space having difficult conversations in order to initiate change and move forward.

Thank you to all of you who are working every day to move our school in a positive direction with a focus on inclusivity, respect, and understanding.

Sincerely,

Dominick D’Angelo
