Description

The Life Skills Magnet Program at David A. Boody Middle School is designed to help students develop the essential skills they need to navigate everyday challenges, enhance their social-emotional learning, and prepare for both college and career. This program focuses on building confidence, self-awareness, and decision-making skills that will serve students long after they graduate.

Our goal is to help students become well-rounded individuals who are ready to transition successfully into high school, college, and the workforce. Throughout the program, we emphasize practical skills such as goal setting, leadership, empathy, and communication—tools that students can apply both in and out of the classroom to thrive in their future endeavors.

Grade 6 Topics: Building a Strong Foundation

  • Getting Acclimated: Students will familiarize themselves with the school environment, ensuring they feel confident navigating the building independently.

  • Developing Friendships: Guidance on how to make and maintain meaningful friendships while building strong social skills.

  • Digital Citizenship: Understanding responsible online behavior, including respectful communication and safe internet use.

  • Self-Awareness: Activities to help students explore their interests, strengths, and challenges to understand themselves better.

  • Writing Emails: Students will learn how to write clear and professional emails, a vital skill for communication in the future.

Grade 7 Topics: Strengthening Practical Skills

  • Career Planning: Introduction to career options, exploring different professions, and understanding how personal interests align with career choices.

  • SMART Goal Setting: Students will learn how to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals to make their aspirations a reality.

  • Budgeting: Introduction to managing money, understanding the importance of saving, and learning the basics of financial planning.

  • Public Speaking & Communication: Developing effective communication skills to express thoughts and ideas confidently in front of others.

  • Leadership Skills: Activities designed to enhance leadership abilities, teaching students how to work collaboratively and inspire others.

Grade 8 Topics: Preparing for High School and Beyond

  • High School Exploration: Students will research and explore high school options that align with their interests and aspirations.

  • High School Application Support: Assistance in navigating the high school application process, including writing personal statements and preparing for interviews.

  • Goal Setting for the Future: Continuing to refine personal and academic goals to ensure success in high school and beyond.

  • College and Career Readiness: Preparing students for the transition from middle school to high school and beyond, focusing on time management, responsibility, and independent decision-making.

  • Dealing with Peer Pressure: Strategies for managing peer pressure and maintaining integrity in challenging situations.

  • Empathy and Respect: Emphasizing the importance of empathy, respect, and understanding toward others in both personal and academic settings.
