6/26 SUMMER BREAK!

GOOD MORNING AND HAPPY SUMMER BREAK!

I am so proud of you all for all the work you have completed this year. I cannot wait to see you all next year.

Lets end the year on a reflection:
1. What was your favorite part of this school year and your least favorite part? Your answer does not have to be about this class.
2. What were some of the best memories you had from this school year?
3. What was your favorite thing you did in science class this year? What was your least favorite?

Have a GREAT summer and stay safe!

Good Morning All and Happy Last Week of School!!!

I am so incredibly proud of you all for the hard work that you have done during these last few months. I cannot wait to see you all again next year!

In celebration of this last week, I want you to take time to reflect on the year. We will be filling in a digital reflection "book." It may seem silly now, but when you look back at this in the 8th grade, you'll be able to see how much you have grown and how much you have changed in such a short amount of time! Please fill in the slides to the best of your ability and you can be completely honest about the questions --- I am not here to judge you! I only want you to reflect on this school year.

Monday- SLIDES 1-3 should be completed and will be checked.
Tuesday- SLIDES 3-6 should be completed and will be checked.

Have fun with this!

You get to choose ONE additional assignment from EACH of the Explore & Review Boards. This may sound confusing, but please watch the video as I walk you through each section. Everything will be due on FRIDAY. Please pace yourself accordingly. At the end of each day, you should have AT LEAST ONE assignment done--- I will be checking each day. Of course, you can always complete more if you want.

If you need help, please ALWAYS let me know! GOOD LUCK!

4/17 Catalyst

Hi All,

This is an extra credit opportunity. I thought it would be a cool idea to show how awesome we are as a class and school by creating something nice for our community. I initially posted this on the stream, but not sure how many people saw it.

Below is a picture that a group of climate change activists in Canada made to show solidarity on climate change. Each person, in their own space, created a letter to create one message. I thought it would be great for us to come up with a message. Maybe something like "Thank you healthcare workers and first responders" or something else that we can come up with!

If you are interested in participating, please respond below! Then, we can decide on a message and assign you a letter (just a single letter). The letter is really simple-- use a sheet of looseleaf or white computer paper and you design the letter to take up the whole page. You get to be super creative with it. You can even design the letter on a table or computer-- print it out or take a picture with the tablet on.

Just answer "Yes" if you want to participate, and "No" if you do not want to participate. If you respond with a 'yes' I will assign you a letter.

The main idea in 'Populations and Resources' was that many things can affect a population size. If a specific type of organism is deprived of certain resources (like food, water, habit, etc.) their population might decrease. Everyone seemed to have understood that the more deaths than births would result in a decrease in the overall population. If there were more births than deaths, then the population would increase.

Now we are moving onto our next unit on Amplify. We will be doing a mix of Amplify and a mix of other work for the next two weeks. We are starting "Matter and Energy in Ecosystems" today. You will be completing the pre-unit assessment for this.

Please look through the google slide presentation for direction about using our science notebook and completing the assignment.

3/25 Science Work

Hi All!

Looking at this unit, understanding what ecosystems are and how they can be affected is an important concept. We will be watching two brainpop videos for food chains and ecosystem. Directions are below:

1. Go to www.brainpop.com
Username: mlu228
password: mlu228

2. Search for "food chain." Click on the food chain video to watch

3. Complete the "Challenge Section" in graded mode. This will just be for your review. In the future, we may have an assessment on this, just make sure you understand the answer. You do not need to submit the score.

4. Complete the "Quiz Section" in graded mode. Redo the quiz if you are not happy with your grade. Submit only until you are happy with your quiz grade & email to me-- [email protected]
^ Under your score, it will say "email your results"

5. Complete the "Make-a-movie" section as a BONUS. --- THIS IS NOT REQUIRED today, but give it a try because it will be in the future.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 for "ecosystems"

This assignment is due at the end of the day THURSDAY, March 26th. That means you have today and tomorrow to complete this classwork. Tomorrow there will be a catalyst question for attendance, however the work is a continuation from today.

Good morning all! I hope you guys are having a great day so far and remote learning has been going well so far.

Based off of yesterday's lesson, we know that food chains show what an animal eats. However, we are really focused on the energy transfer. We know that organisms must get energy from another source. Producers get their energy from the sun. Consumers get their energy from eating other plants and/or animals.

One key thing to remember is in a food chain we read the arrow as "is eaten by." For example, rabbit ---> snake. This food chain is read as "The rabbit is eaten by the snake." The arrow shows the flow of energy.

A second key concept is that when an organism eats another, they are obtain the energy-rich molecules of that organism. Look at the attached image. Each level is called a trophic level. Only 10% of the energy is transferred from one level to the next. Most energy escapes in the form of heat due to cellular respiration (the process of breaking down food for energy).

Based off of the above information and the video about food webs and ecosystems, why do you think the quaternary consumer/ top carnivore needs to eat more than the primary consumers?

*Bonus-- you guys can reply to each other's post on this one. Try and comment on at least 2 other people's posts! Just a reminder that this is to be an appropriate class discussion using academic language. Any misuse of language and inappropriate will be reported.

**Don't forget there will not be another post for science work. Yesterday's assignment was to be completed by the end of today. Make sure you have completed both the quizzes for food web and ecosystem. The results should be emailed to me. Refer back to the "3/25 Science Work" assignment for more information.

The main idea of the"Population & Resources" unit so far is to talk about births and deaths in terms of how it can change the population. Finish the following statements:

1. If the number of births is more than the number of deaths than the population will _____________(increase or decrease)_____.

2. If the number of deaths is more than the number of births than the population will _____________(increase or decrease)_____.

3. If the number of births and death are the same than the population will __________________________________.

3/24 Science Classwork

Remember your role as student ecologists, you guys are trying to determine why the moon jelly population in Glacier Sea increased in size. In the previous lesson, we looked at birth and deaths as reasons a population can cause the population to increase, decrease, or stay the same size.

Now, watch the attached video. The ecologist from the Glacier Sea Research Center told us the moon jelly population increased in size. How does she know this? It would not be possible to count all of the moon jellies in an entire population, so how do ecologists actually know if a population is increasing or decreasing in size? In a moment, you will watch a short video to learn about how ecologists collect evidence about population changes.

Remember our unit question: How do ecologists get evidence about populations? Keep that in mind as you are watching the video.

Complete the attached document to fill in your answers.

Please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any other questions or concerns. Good luck guys! Miss you all (except 617.....just kidding!)

I really do miss yelling at you guys for hiding in the alcove! I even miss having to tell you guys to stop eating in my class. When all of this is over and we are back in the classroom, we will have one day of eating and working! I'll bring some snacks :).

Please always remember that I am here for you (about science or anything else!). Good luck guys and stay safe!

A group of scientists has been observing a population of meerkats in Botswana. They notice that the size of the population has not changed much between 2000 and 2016.

The population size did not change between 2000 and 2016.

Theo thinks that the population size stayed the same because no new meerkats were born and none died. They were all the same meerkats.

Fabiola thinks that it is not possible that all the same meerkats were in the population for the whole time.

Which person do you most agree with? Explain your answer
