RAGTIME is also a Tony award winning musical with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally written in 1998. It is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow.

Set in the early 20th century, RAGTIME tells the story of three groups in the United States: African Americans, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr., a Harlem musician; upper-class suburbanites, represented by Mother, the matriarch of a white upper-class family in New Rochelle, New York; and Eastern European immigrants, represented by Tateh, a Jewish immigrant from Latvia. The show also incorporates historical figures such as Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J. P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford White, Harry Kendall Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma Goldman.

The two songs I want you to listen to are from the musical RAGTIME.Even though these songs were written over 20 years ago about an era over 100 years ago, I think these songs are very relevant to the world all around us right now.

Your assignment is to REALLY LISTEN to the songs and let me know your thoughts. Listen to them more then once. I want you to really think about the lyrics!I
AM GIVING YOU TWO DAYS TO DO THIS ASSIGNMENT.

Please, answer these questions in a paragraph. Include these thoughts in your paragraph(s)......

-What emotions do these 2 songs "spark" in you?

Day 43(Wednesday week 9)

Today I want you write out the monologue you chose in your own handwriting ,on a separate piece of paper, so it becomes more your own.

After you do that, read it outloud, several times, so that you become very familiar with it, but DO NOT MEMORIZE it yet.
Go back to last week where you told me your 5 w's and think of them while you are reading the monologue so you will make clear choices.

***Answer the following questions in FULL SENTENCES.
1. Did you write out the monologue you chose in your own handwriting?
2. How many times did you rad through the monologue outloud?
3. What 3 emotions does your character feel from the start to finish of the monologue. This is called your "emotional journey." (You must have 3 emotions, if you didn't feel 3, read it again until you do)***

Tomorrow you will go on FLIPGRID and video yourself, reading the monologue (from the paper you wrote it out on in your own handwriting) NOT MEMORIZED, so that I can coach you and give you notes on things that I think need adjustments or changes. I will post the grid tomorrow, so do not try to submit until tomorrow.

Any questions, ask in the private comments, but please read the directions carefully, since most of your questions can be answered if you carefully read the directions.
